This study highlights the hitherto overlooked impact of medical knowledge on the conceptions of the body politic and government in medieval Europe, thereby opening up new vistas in the formation of modern European political language. The interplay between Greek and Roman philosophy, Roman and canon law and Christian theology has been axiomatic in the conventional narrative of the history of European political thought. By breaking down the disciplinary barrier between the history of political thought and the history of medicine, Medicine and the Body Politic in Medieval Europe shows that there were other sources of intellectual inspiration for past conceptualization of politics.
